Title:Two Dancing Bacchantes
Date: Early 20th century
Medium: Carved veined marble relief
Signature/inscription: Unsigned; applied heraldic wax seal verso
Relief dimensions: 14.5 x 22 cm
Framed dimensions: 23 x 31 cm
An original carved marble relief depicting two classically inspired female dancers, probably Bacchantes or maenads associated with the worship of Bacchus. The figures are shown in animated, intertwined poses, with raised arms, flowing hair and finely rendered drapery conveying a strong sense of rhythmic movement.
The relief is carved from a single piece of attractively veined pale marble. Its softly modelled figures and classical subject reflect the enduring influence of ancient Greek and Roman sculpture upon European decorative art during the late 19th and early 20th centuries.
A dark heraldic wax seal bearing the impression of a rampant animal is applied to the reverse of the marble. This may represent a workshop or former owner’s mark, although it has not presently been identified.
The plaque is presented in an ornate gilt frame with woven or herringbone-patterned decoration and classical moulded borders.
Condition:
The marble is in generally good condition, with natural veining, light surface marks and age-related discolouration. The gilt frame displays some rubbing, marks and small areas of wear consistent with age. Please examine all photographs, which form part of the description. Further photographs and condition information are available on request.
