£495.00

Artist: French School
Title:Village with Church and Poplar Trees
Date: 1980
Medium: Oil on canvas
Signature/inscription: Apparently unsigned; indistinct stamp verso, apparently dated 1980
Image dimensions: 49.5 x 60 cm
Framed dimensions: 58.5 x 69 cm
Frame: Presented in a broad, moulded giltwood frame with a distressed finish and cream linen-covered inner slip

An atmospheric French School landscape, apparently dated 1980, depicting a village viewed across open fields, with slender poplar trees framing the composition and a church tower rising prominently in the distance.

The painting is executed in a restrained palette of pale blue, ochre, russet and green. Its simplified architecture, dark linear outlines and freely handled surface reflect the continuing influence of French Post-Impressionist and School of Paris painting. Small figures and grazing animals animate the foreground, while the loosely described buildings and distant church create a strong sense of place. Faint preparatory grid lines remain visible beneath the paint, indicating that the composition was transferred from an earlier drawing or photographic source.

Presented in a gilt frame with a cream-painted inner slip.

Condition:
The painting is in generally good condition, with some light surface dirt, minor marks and age-related wear. Please examine all photographs, which form part of the description. Further photographs and condition information are available on request.
